Mathematics, Science and Technology

Journals

Every week there are journals that we have to post.

Journal 1- Introduction

Hello, My name is Meenakshi Arora. I am from Punjab, India. Currently, I’m living in surrey.

Find x, you will get my age :2021-1996 = x?

umm! Mathematics is one of the most interesting subject that I love to teach and learn.

For now, I am posting my teaching philosophy using flipgrid: https://shorts.flipgrid.com/watch/20859096377065965 (Links to an external site.) (Link will open in new tab.)

I am not too short but not too tall as my height is 5’3.

I would love to watch movies, series and even cartoons. Haha, I know it’s weird for you that seriously CARTOONS? but yes! That’s me.

I am too shy at the beginning but once I am comfortable then everyone be like, “Meenakshi You’re so CRAZY”.

Well ! I am super excited to learn mathematics in this semester.

Wish me good luck though.

bye!! cya

MATH AUTOBIOGRAPHY

” The only way to learn Mathematics is to do mathematics.” – Paul Halmos

Whenever I heard Mathematics, various terms comes into my mind like integration, Pythagoras, Laplace theorem, Differentiation, trigonometry.  My journey with mathematics is never ending as I am an IT engineer. I have studied mathematics of about more than 15years. During my school days, I used to love mathematics. I love to play with the equations and learn new theorems.

I still remember few formulas that solves my grade 7 problems, eg. (a+b)2 = a2+ b2 +2ab. When I opted for sciences in grade 11, Mathematics was a compulsory subject that we had to study. In my grade 12, my score was not that good that I expected in Mathematics.

I believe that sometimes we find few problems can be solved easily, but when we try to solve them, it becomes more complex like mathematics. I always consider mathematics as a interesting and a tough subject.

Even, it makes you stronger when your mind acts like a calculator and face real world problems. Moreover, while studying mathematics you can also handle pressure while solving equations and makes you feel confident when you know your answer is correct.

In the end, I would say. as a learner mathematics is not that easy if we are not paying attention to it and, as a teacher mathematics is very challenging subject to teach.

Week 5 - Strategies

Activity: There are 7 people at a party. How many handshakes will it take for everyone
to shake everyone else’s hand?

solution: The first person will shake hands with 6 others and since there are 7 people in all.

similarly, second person will shake hand with 5 others as he already shake hand with the first person.

so, by using this strategy:

first person = 6

second person = 5

third person = 4

forth person = 3

fifth person = 2

sixth person =1

as seventh person will not do any handshake.

Hence,

6+5+4+3+2+1 = 21 Handshakes.

Journal 3- Growth Mindset

After watching the video: Carol Dweck’s Growth Mindset, I believe that we don’t think everyone’s the same. As every person is different his thinking, mindset is different. After 6th grade, study gets difficult and students are unable to cope up with the learning and they start hating there schools. As they research and conclude that, everyone student has different goals and in growth mindset they believe intelligence can be developed. This new growth mindset shows a different picture in learning new things.

Assessment is a crucial element in learning. We got to know how we learn if we do assessments. There are mainly two types of assessments that we use: Summative and Formative. Summative Assessment is used when we are going to assess the whole course in one final exam whereas formative assessment is used to figure out the on going learning of an individual during the course. Both these assessment act as a celebration of learning if we have a proper balance of formative and summative.

Geo Caching

Geocaching is one of the most adventurous game I have ever played. Our trip to Stanley Park was amazing just because of Geocaching and obviously with my team. We explored through geocaching app and finding treasure with the group. Experiencing new things by this app really helped me to learn more about the technology.

It’s a great example of “Math with Map”.
We found three treasures at Stanley park that was:
  • Fore Bears
  • Tourists Trail
  • Tis the winter season
Overall in these three Geocaching locations we found out the treasure.
The difficulty level for Tis the winter season was higher than the above two, due to this It was an awesome hunt.
Apart from this, our group enjoyed a lot.
